How Can Osteopathy Help with Breastfeeding?
Both mothers and babies can benefit from osteopathic treatment to address physical and functional issues that may affect breastfeeding. Here are some ways osteopathy can help:
For Babies:
Improving Latching: Osteopathic techniques can help relieve tension in the baby's head, neck, and mouth, making it easier for them to latch effectively.
Reducing Reflux and Colic: Gentle osteopathic treatment can alleviate digestive discomfort, reducing reflux and colic, which can interfere with breastfeeding.
Addressing Tongue-Tie: Osteopaths can assist in the management of tongue-tie by improving the mobility of the tongue and surrounding structures.
Enhancing Suckling Reflex: By addressing any musculoskeletal restrictions, osteopathy can improve the baby's suckling reflex, making feeding more efficient.
-
How Osteopathy Works for Plagiocephaly
Osteopathic treatment for plagiocephaly involves gentle, hands-on techniques that are specifically adapted for infants. These techniques aim to:
Encourage Skull Flexibility: The bones of an infant’s skull are soft and malleable. Osteopaths use subtle movements to encourage proper alignment and promote natural shaping as the baby grows.
Relieve Tension in the Neck and Shoulders: Tightness in the neck muscles (often due to torticollis) can contribute to a baby favoring one side, exacerbating plagiocephaly. Osteopathic techniques help to release this tension, allowing for more balanced movement and reducing the risk of further flattening.
Improve Overall Body Symmetry: Osteopathy considers the entire body, not just the head. By ensuring that the spine, shoulders, and pelvis are aligned, osteopathic treatment supports the baby's ability to develop in a balanced and symmetrical way.
Benefits of Osteopathic Treatment
Non-Invasive and Gentle: Osteopathic techniques are safe and gentle, making them ideal for treating infants. The treatment is comfortable for the baby and typically involves soft touch and mild pressure.
Holistic Approach: Osteopathy looks at the whole body, not just the affected area. This comprehensive approach can help prevent future issues related to posture, movement, and overall development.
Complementary Care: Osteopathy can be used alongside other treatments, such as physical therapy or helmet therapy, providing a well-rounded approach to managing plagiocephaly.

Breastfeeding can be a rewarding experience for both mother and baby, but it doesn't always come without challenges. One common issue that can affect breastfeeding is tongue-tie, a condition where the strip of skin connecting the baby's tongue to the bottom of their mouth is shorter or thicker than usual. This can lead to difficulties with latching and feeding.
Understanding Tongue Tie
Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, is a congenital condition that restricts the tongue's range of motion. This can cause problems with breastfeeding, as the baby may struggle to latch properly, leading to inadequate milk transfer, prolonged feeding times, and discomfort for the mother among other symptoms (Messner & Lalakea, 2000). Early identification and intervention are crucial to ensure successful breastfeeding. How Osteopathy Can Help
Osteopathy is a holistic approach that focuses on the body's structure and function. For babies with tongue ties, osteopathy can play a significant role in supporting breastfeeding by addressing the associated physical tensions and restrictions. -

Osteopathy for Babies:
A Gentle Approach to Infant Health
Introduction to Osteopathy for Babies
Osteopathy for babies is a specialised branch of osteopathy focusing on the delicate and developing bodies of infants. This gentle, hands-on therapy aims to support and enhance the natural healing processes of babies, addressing a variety of common infant issues such as colic, reflux, sleep disturbances, and more.
Lydia combines her Osteopathic training with her knowledge as an lactation consultant (IBCLC), along with her experience as a mum of 2 young children, to create a supportive and understanding environment for mothers to get the help they need in their motherhood journey.
After finishing Osteopathy at university, Lydia started further training in treating pregnant patients. This naturally grew in to wanting to help postpartum breastfeeding support. Her extra training led her to work in a paediatric osteopathy clinic, where she was able to develop her skills treating babies and young children.

What is a Lactation Consultant or IBCLC:
An IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. An IBCLC is a healthcare professional who specialises in the clinical management of breastfeeding and lactation. They are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), which is a globally recognized certification body.
Here’s what being an IBCLC entails:
Expertise in Breastfeeding Support:
IBCLCs are trained to assist with a wide range of breastfeeding issues. They provide evidence-based information and practical support to breastfeeding mothers. This includes helping with latch and positioning, managing breastfeeding challenges like low milk supply, painful breastfeeding, or engorgement, and offering advice on how to maintain lactation when returning to work or during illness.
Comprehensive Training and Certification:
To become an IBCLC, an individual must complete extensive education in lactation and breastfeeding, gain clinical experience under supervision, and pass a rigorous certification exam. This process ensures that IBCLCs are highly skilled and knowledgeable in the science and practice of lactation.
Role in Healthcare:
IBCLCs often work in hospitals, clinics, or private practice. They might collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as paediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, and nurses, to ensure comprehensive care for mothers and babies. Their role is crucial in promoting breastfeeding as a public health priority, as breastfeeding has well-documented benefits for both the mother and the infant.
Overall, an IBCLC plays a vital role in supporting and empowering mothers to achieve their breastfeeding goals, improving outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
Tongue Ties
Benefits of Osteopathy for Babies with Tongue Ties
Improving Latching and Suckling: Osteopathy can help release tension in the baby's head, neck, and mouth, facilitating better latching and more effective suckling (Olivi, Chaubal, & Olivi, 2012).
Reducing Discomfort: Gentle osteopathic techniques can alleviate discomfort caused by muscle tightness and improve the baby's overall comfort during feeding.
Enhancing Range of Motion: Osteopaths can work on the muscles and tissues around the tongue and jaw to enhance their range of motion, supporting better tongue function.
Supporting Post-Release Care: If a frenectomy (surgical release of the tongue tie) is performed, osteopathy can aid in the healing process and help the baby adapt to their newfound mobility (Kotlow, 2011).
The Role of Osteopathy in Post-Release Care
If a frenectomy is performed to release the tongue tie, osteopathy can be an invaluable part of the post-operative care. Following the procedure, babies may need to adapt to their new tongue mobility. Osteopathy can help by:
Supporting Healing: Promoting optimal healing of the tissues.
Improving Function: Ensuring that the tongue and related muscles function properly.
Enhancing Feeding: Facilitating better latching and suckling post-release (O'Callaghan, 2012).
Research and Evidence
Research supports the benefits of osteopathy for babies with tongue ties. A study by Olivi, Chaubal, and Olivi (2012) highlights the importance of addressing muscle tension and restrictions to improve breastfeeding outcomes. Additionally, Kotlow (2011) emphasises the role of osteopathy in post-frenectomy care, noting improved feeding and overall comfort for babies.
Osteopathy provides a gentle, holistic approach to support breastfeeding for babies with tongue ties. By addressing the physical tensions and restrictions associated with this condition, osteopathy can improve latching, reduce discomfort, and enhance the overall breastfeeding experience. If you suspect your baby has a tongue tie or are facing breastfeeding challenges, contact our qualified osteopath’s to explore how this therapy can benefit you and your baby.

Osteopathy for Plagiocephaly: Gentle Approach to Correcting Infant Skull Shape
Understanding Plagiocephaly
Plagiocephaly, commonly known as "flat head syndrome," is a condition where an infant’s head develops a flattened appearance on one side. This can occur due to consistent pressure on one part of the skull, often from sleeping in the same position. While it is generally a cosmetic issue, untreated plagiocephaly can sometimes lead to developmental concerns, including asymmetry in facial features and potential issues with jaw alignment.
The Role of Osteopathy in Treating Plagiocephaly
Osteopathy offers a gentle, non-invasive approach to treating plagiocephaly. Osteopathic practitioners focus on the body's musculoskeletal system, emphasising the interconnection between the structure and function of the body. For infants with plagiocephaly, osteopathy can help by addressing imbalances in the skull, neck, and upper body, encouraging a more symmetrical head shape.
When to Seek Osteopathic Care
Parents are encouraged to seek osteopathic care as early as possible if they notice any signs of plagiocephaly in their baby. Early intervention can be more effective, as the skull bones are more responsive to treatment in the first few months of life.
What to Expect During an Osteopathic Session
During an osteopathic session, the practitioner will conduct a thorough assessment of the baby’s skull shape, neck mobility, and overall body alignment. The treatment itself is calm and soothing, often lasting between 30 to 45 minutes. Parents are encouraged to be present and involved during the session, ensuring their baby feels safe and secure.
Conclusion
Osteopathy offers a gentle, holistic approach to managing and correcting plagiocephaly in infants. By focusing on the entire musculoskeletal system, osteopaths can help to restore balance and symmetry, supporting the baby’s natural growth and development. Early intervention through osteopathy can lead to better outcomes, ensuring that your child’s head shape and overall health are on the right track.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. Your Osteopath is an AHPRA registered, Osteopathy Board registered clinician, with no referral required for your visit.
What is the difference between and Osteopath, Chiropractor, Physiotherapist?
Osteopathy looks at the body as a whole, considering several factors when diagnosing your presentation. It is a unique way of looking at your problem when compared to physiotherapists and chiropractors. Chiropractors look at alignment, posture and the central nervous system and base most treatments around creating harmony of these 3 tenants. Physiotherapists are trained musculoskeletal clinicians that typically ply their expertise at rehabbing specific tendons, joints, and ligaments. All have a place in the health landscape.
What can I expect during an Osteopathy session?
During your session, your Osteopath will check in and see how your condition is progressing. Conduct a specific set of assessments. Begin treatment, typically hands on (wear something comfortable and easy to move in). Your osteopath will review and/or prescribe exercises interventions.
